Sports massages focus on stiff and tight muscles. They involve the application of therapeutic massage and stretching to assist an athlete’s performance and recovery from activity.
It involves the manipulation of "soft tissue" (connective tissue that has not hardened into bone or cartilage). This includes skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia, which is a form of connective tissue that lines and ensheathes the other soft tissue. Sports massage is designed to assist in correcting problems and imbalances in soft tissue that are caused by repetitive and strenuous physical activity.
Sports massages at The Medical are delivered by expert physiotherapist, sports injury therapists or specialist sports massage therapists. Our collective experience includes massage time at Bristol Rugby, Bristol City Football club, Team GB Lacrosse, London 2012 Para-Olympics and the London Marathon.
Sports massages involve the application of therapeutic massage and stretching to assist an athlete’s performance and recovery from activity. There are different types of sports massage based on when the massage is delivered in relation to competition:
During the training programme (maintenance) – to correct soft tissue dysfunction
Before competition (pre-event) – to aid preparation by loosening muscles
After competition (post-event) – to help recovery by improving circulation and reduce muscle tension
